So, I'm starting my new job today

I'm working as a cashier/waitress at a restaurant and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar job and has some tips for me. I'm really nervous that I'm going to mess it up.

You will mess up, it's a given. It's a new job, something you've, I assume, never done before. It should be expected that you will mess up at some point.

Being afraid to mess up is just going to make you freak out when you finally do. Expect it and realize This is something new, I can't be expected to be perfect. I just have to learn from my mess up and keep going.

Good luck though with the new job! I always like to remind myself because I am a bit of a perfectionist, as long as you're moving forward after a set back, you're doing what you should be!

I always like to remind myself (because I am a bit of a perfectionist) "It's about progress, not perfection".

This is probably exactly what I needed to hear since I'm so critical of myself. Thanks!

If you are slow or need to take a second to recap what to do just explain to the customer you are new, your first day infact, and that you are just learning the ropes. Most people are fully aware that if you are new that the service is not going to be as good as someone who has done it for years. And since you are in the service industry, be fully aware some people are just big dicks and may be rude if you are slower. That is not your fault, it is their attitude problem not yours. They cannot fault you for something you are just learning.

Thank you everyone! It went very well and I actually didn't mess up anything that I couldn't easily fix. Feeling pretty badass right now.

Just pull out one of swords if you get hard to deal with customers.

Dude. It'd be super easy because it's literally only a minute walk from my house, if even. But I'm pretty happy there. They give me free food and ice cream.
