I am having a terrible streak - 4 non pops in a rows!
I read on some site, can't remember which one, to wait until the white pixels pop up towards the left side near the speech bubble. I used that for like a week and a half and it worked everyday. But the past 2 days it hasn't been working...Not sure what to make of it, but thought it was worth mentioning lol
Play on medium difficulty. I only popped the orange daily and I got it in a few weeks. Easy difficulty will not give out the avatar
i got it aiming for the balloon that gets popped in the avatar itself. got it after 4 tries using this method but not entirely sure it's related at all lol

Your question is certainly valid.
I have had the same trouble myself.
Even when going for the very middle balloon -- nothing...
I'm having a hard time popping even the middle one lol! I think you really have to aim the middle part not those on the side. Stupid balloon.
It's random. All of the dailies like wheels and such are random. Certain difficulties just have a higher rate of winning (but also give items of less worth)
