For me this would have to be "Night" by Elie Wiesel. He is a holocaust survivor, and its just about his struggles being in a Jewish family during WWII. He also survived all the most deadly camps, Auschwitz etc.
I was never a big reader but The Raven's Gate has to be my favorite book. I read it a few years back.
Green Days by the River & Miguel Street. All Caribbean based books, but hella good.
The Hatchet series by Gary Paulsen, its one of the ones i loved as a child and still to this day, i just love everything about it, i have read all three many times, its large print, adults can read the 3 books in a few hours, its a good little story if you need to kill a few hours
