I grew up playing so I don't know of any guides though I'm sure sources like bulbapedia and serebii could teach you a bit. Also, trial and error if you play some practice rounds on the pokemonshowdown site itself could be helpful.

Just study up on type effectiveness charts and you should be fine, also practicing gives you a good feel for what works and what doesn't :p
