In Tim O’Briens' novel, The Things They Carried, women played many crucial roles.
Although there are many supporting female characters throughout the novel, three female protagonists help cultivate significant roles. Mary Anne Bell goes against the wind, and challenges the typical image of a girlfriend at home whose purpose is solely to comfort her man.
Linda’s premature death instills the reality of mortality into O’Brien. Moreover, Martha plays the role of Jimmy Cross’ lover, she was to him what something was to every soldier; something to keep them sane, something to miss at home and long for. The roles in this play helped solidify the impact this novel tries to present. With a carfeull selection of diction and amplification, the author has provided the reader with varying prespectives.

Shouldn't these be, since you should only talk in one time:

In my experience, you shouldn't use different times in an essay. It's hard for me to explain it, since I never liked to study the tense, but you can't write "woman played" and "protagonists help", since one of them is in the past, the other on present.

Of course, the word is tense -.-

But why should it all be in the past...?

    Yes, you are right.

I didn't understand what you meant because you were using different terms than I am used to.

Sorry for that, English grammar has never been my cup of tea actually, the terms part.
