Not sure if we have any more movie people here this year, but I for one am super excited again for this year's race so I'm starting this thread now hehe. Maybe not as much as last year's since I feel the repertoire of movies is weaker than the last... but anyway!! Does anyone play GoldenDerby or follow award-bound movies?
So I haven't been as much of an avid movie-watcher as I was like 10+ years ago, but I've been meaning to get back into it. I used to love award show season so much! These days, I'm a little more cynical, and I really need to start watching the shows like SAG and Critic's Choice.
Yess thank you kittyray for not leaving me hanging last year I was basically talking to myself on the thread I made LOL
I am a bit similar, I think! I used to go watch everything that had buzz but nowadays I'm much more particular, especially if a movie is gonna have bad vibes and take me out for a few days emotionally. I also skip movies I don't find interesting now too. For example, I think I'm skipping Zone of Interest and Saltburn this year (though Saltburn is free with Amazon Prime so hmm)
@(you need an account to see links) - Sorry I meant to respond to your post!
These are the movies I've seen the most about for this year in general (I also like r/oscarrace for award show stuff since no one else in my life is into it, but they can be very vicious and pretentious sometimes!):
- Oppenheimer (for Lead & Supporting Actors, Director, Picture)
- Barbie (for Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Costume Design, Song)
- Poor Things (for Lead Actress, Costume Design)
- Zone of Interest
- Anatomy of a Fall (for Lead Actress)
- American Fiction
- Across the Spiderverse (for animation)
- Killers of the Flower Moon (for Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Director, Picture)
- May December (for Lead & Supporting Actresses, Supporting Actor)
- Saltburn (some people want Rosamund Pike for Supporting Actress)
- Past Lives
- Maestro (Bradley Cooper REALLY wants that Oscar)
- The Boy and the Heron
- All of Us Strangers
- The Holdovers (my dark horse!)
- The Color Purple
I could be biased tho since I saw most of those and they were on my Oscar maybes list haha.

It's okay, I'm doing a million thngs at once and slow to reply.
Of those the only ones I've seen are Barbie and The Holdovers. I'm a fan of Barbie for Costumes and maybe even production design? I really liked The Holdovers, but def would be pleased to see it get some nods!

Yeah! Somebody in my family went to Deerfield, where some parts were filmed and where the lead actor attended, so we found out about it through news related to that. I def could see it getting a Best Picture nomination, but hard to say without seeing very many others. I feel like Da'vine Joy Randolph could get a Best Actress nomination, too?

I only ever follow award shows if a movie I'm deeply, deeply obsessed with is nominated for awards across the different shows. The last time this happened was in 2020 (i.e., award shows covering movies released in 2019).
