You could just mention to a few people that the pictures are fake, and then leave gossip to do its own work

A lot of people do that, it is called e-whoring. You make money from old fat guys from pretending to be a slamming chick, mostly guys do it but girls do it as well, it can be done for many reasons but the top one being money. Just google e-whoring and you will be surprised at what you find.
