A little dejected that Flora wasn't made a bachelorette, because I fucking love her, but alas, I digress

I preordered the special edition and it should be delivering tomorrow and once it gets in I'll attach a few more photos

I did buy the digital as well to play and the have free DLC right now of a mukumuku costume!

Woohoooo! HM:AWL was I think my favorite HM title growing up. I've played almost every one of them (Animal Parade was another of my favorites!) and I'm really excited about this remake. Celia was my OG LOVE but Nami and Muffy too on my replays.... I think this game has some of the best Bachelorettes of the HM/SOS titles.

Explaining the name change to Story of Seasons; What people mean when they say Natsume Harvest Moon games.

TLDR:

Story of seasons is from the OG team that made harvest moon and Natsume decided to not relinquish the name “Harvest moon” when the companies fell out. The last true harvest moon was a new beginning!

I've never played HM, but honestly, it looks right up my alley. I love games similar to Stardew Valley, so maybe I should try this out? Do you think this would be a beginner game for someone who hasn't ever played HM before? Or should I start somewhere else?

Looks like a fun game, I've played some HM before. But I've played a lot of Stardew. It is something about these "harvest games" that are just so relaxing.

Yes! I love Stardew as well but HM/SoS games are more storyline/family/farming without any dungeon-like areas or monsters like stardew has. This is a great beginner game! HM/SoS is really focused deeply on relationships and storylines with the town members, creating a family, etc. From what I remember, AWL has a really in-depth relationship with your kid as well. The townfolk are really well-written and deep.

Honestly, you could pick up pretty much any HM/SoS game (see @(you need an account to see links)'s description above about the name change) as they're all fairly very different. But if you've played Stardew you'll have no problem with these, it's actually probably a little more slower-paced than stardew.

That is a pretty wild ride for the name, but its good to know that the game (in general) is still the same, just with a different name.
So if I wanted to experience the original Harvest Moon, I would need to look into Story of Seasons.

Once I get the funds, I 100% will be trying this game out!

Oooh that's a good question.

So I started with the harvest moon games, waaaaay back in the day 2000 or so, I personally love the gamecube version but it is fairly different from Stardew.

I think that SOS: Friends of Mineral Town or Harvest Moon Friends of mineral town (if you run a GBA emulator / have a GBA) would be a bit more in a similar vein, if that makes sense.

The mining in AWL is very simple, the seasons are only 10 days ish long, and there are only 6 chapters (that we know of) in AWL, so the game play and pacing is somewhat different than story of seasons.

Whereas Mineral Town you can play as long as you'd like, and it's a much easier transition if you've only played Stardew!

EDIT:

ALSO if you're looking for a game that has dungeon crawling / fighting and farming, I def would also look into Rune Factory.

Rune Factory has a lot of crafting elements, and the stories are phenomenal. They are revamping RF3 for the switch release in september (and you know I'll def have a thread about it)

But I would definitely look into those, and honestly they are some of my favorite games. I just bought a copy of RF 1 for the DS in immaculate condition from Good Will and was binging this before I got AWL!

Edit 2:

The only game I personally don't recommend is Pioneers of Olive Town. Played it in it's entirety and it just felt so different from the SOS and HM games, I wasn't the biggest fan, it wasn't awful but it wasn't great.

I will say - some of my faves would probably be:

RF 2 (Love me that travelling merchant Mei)
RF Frontier
RF Tides of Destiny
RF 5 - the most recent one was honestly phenomenal and they started giving us older bachelors / bachelorettes ugh)

HM: Animal Parade
HM: Tree Of Tranquility ( same town / characters)
HM: A new Beginning
HM: FOMT


SOS (all sans PoOT)
The DS versions of SOS are just so so good.
