There is ALWAYS a way to get info off of a hard drive unless it's smashed to pieces. Do you still have your windows installation disk? If so see if you can start windows with that, if you can, go to recovery console on the BIOS before windows fully starts. Then you should be at a black screen where you then type: chkdsk /r
If that doesn't work, go to the same blackscreen either type Fixboot or Fixmbr
I had this problem before so let me know if this works and if not I'll try to figure out another option.
Yeah, you can always recover the data. I suggest buying an external enclosure with USB connection ($20?) and taking out the old HDD and putting it in the enclosure, then plugging that up to a different computer and seeing if it works.
Do you get any errors when the machine is booting up, does the OS start to load at all? If the drive has no errors and just you OS is corrupt; you can slave the drive using a desktop, to recover your data. If the drive is bad, it is still possible to reccover some of your data (unless it does not spin at all).
seeing how much you like your laptop i made you a laptop that had a laptop that had a laptop in it, but that laptop crashed so, sorry for your luck.
and yes this has happened to me before too it sucks.
just thought i would try to make you feel better.
