Is the color at least a permanent modification to the pet then or is it still reverted if you remove the pet?

It's permanent. So you can paint Faerie and sell it for NP for example.

Colour It Wild

Description: Allows you to get your pet zapped with exclusive Lab Ray colours.

Duration: Instant Use

Details: When redeemed, you will be able to select one of your Neopets and which colour you would like to paint it. You may only choose a colour that has (obviously) been released, and colours not available at the Lab Ray are not available with this perk (not available: Baby, Magma, Pirate, Plushie, Quiguki, Royal, Usuki, and Ice Boris). You may redeem this perk only once.

Worth It? If you have a particular paint job in mind (excluding Lab Ray exclusive colours), then this may be a relatively cheap way to get your dream Neopet.
WARNING: If you do not select a Neopet and colour option immediately without refreshing or closing the page, you will lose the perk and the points you redeemed. TNT confirmed this is not a bug, so we advise knowing what you want ahead of time and making a swift choice when redeeming.

Make sure before you redeem that the Neopet you wish to paint is on your account, as refreshing the page to get an updated Neopet list will cause you to lose the redemption (and your points).

If you want any of those avatar pets, have it morphed to the species already; I think people have been opening a new tab on their browser and are able to morph that way. But if you want, lets say a Fire Blum, I'd suggest having a Blum ready to paint. I wouldn't take any chances doing the tab trick.

So in theory if I have a pet Chia as my active I can get Pea Chia?

It doesn�t need to be tested. As long as it fits the parameters set above, you can paint it that color.
