    [Doctor Who] New Doctor Announced

I'm not a Doctor Who fan anymore, but I used to watch the show when I was younger and I'm sure there's probably some people here who like it.
Jodie Whittaker has been announced as the first women to play the (13th) Doctor on Doctor Who. This decision has proven to be quite controversial, as there's many people who say that the Doctor has always been a male, and thus should remain so.
What do you guys think? I think it's interesting, as I've heard support for a female Doctor in the previous years.

I've seen all doctor who episodes since the 2005 reboot, I have yet to watch the twelfth doctor (guess I can watch it in one go now), people didn't like Peter Capaldi either and I've heard good things about his role.

Ultimately its up to the writers of the series, I heard Steven Moffat left the series so.....

Edit: maybe we'll have a male main companion.

I honestly was about to say "Uh, women can be doctors, and it's been a thing long before this." Then I saw it's about doctor who.

I haven't gotten into it yet, apparently it's part of my initiation for becoming a brit.

Once I watch it I'll have more of an opinion on this one.

As an outsider with zero interest in the show at all... I can see both sides.

Dr. Who has historically been a "super nerd" show that had an audience of basement-dwelling dudes for decades. In recent years, it's gotten popular with boys and girls alike... I can see why the girls (and some guys) would like to see a famale doctor. It is a different move and it might spice it up for the show and viewers.

On the flip-side, those basement-dwellers and nerds have grown up with male doctors. They have a history together. Some people use TV and characters to cope through rougher periods of their lives. Now, they've taken this major character and said, "Dr. is a girl now, we didn't ask you, we don't care what you think, accept it or fuck off." So I can see where some of the hostility is coming from. And I've been checking twitter and even females are a little miffed at the whole thing. They're mostly showing comments along the lines of "Stop your PC bullshit on my show". This show is emotional for people.
How would the Game of Thrones crowd react if Jon Snow suddenly got a gender swap? Remember when they tried to make Thor a female?? That went over as well as a hoard of angry ducks in a balloon store.

And I can see it from both sides. It's damned if you do, damned if you don't. I mean... I'd be fucking pissed if they flipped all the genders of my beloved shows just to be 3dgy. I hope she works out, I hope she's an amazing doctor, and I really hope the show doesn't tank because of it. I know it's pretty much historic at this point and many people love the series.

For me wether the doctor is male or female is neither here nor there.

Anyone complaining about it being a woman can let the door hit them on the way out of the fandom for all I care! I feel like I didnt get enough time to connect with ecckleston properly, David tennant is my all time fav. Never really warmed up to matt smith, although I thought the story in those series was very moving and amazing. Ive only seen half of capaldis episodes but he is great!

When capaldi was announced as no12 we lost all the whiney fangirls who couldnt handle a doctor who wasnt young. Now we will lose all the whiney mysoginistic fanboys who cant handle a woman!

I myself was rooting for Maggie Smith *sigh*

When they make a big deal out of things like this... I feel like it sort of pulls away and makes it sort of gimmicky. "This doctor is female, you should watch!!" - eh.

I'm not a huge fan of the show, haven't seen much of it so realistically I don't really care. It does nothing for me one way or the other
