Question [Suggestion] Autolock threads that are >= 3 weeks old (with example)

    Hey all,

In order to prevent threads that are 3 weeks or older from getting posted on by unsuspecting noobs (<- this guy.) I'd like to suggest a vBulletin mod that allows you guys to automatically lock threads after 3 weeks of no activity. An example of such a mod can be found (you need an account to see links).

    Pros:

    1. Say goodbye to necroposting
    2. Topics stay current/relevant/always froooosh!
    3. Mods can focus on other more prevalent tasks like banning shitposters lol

    Cons:

    1. With a forum locking inactive threads automatically... it's like taking work away from the mods, although they probably have a plethora of things to worry about anyway.

I'm sure there's a version of this for vB 4.2 somewhere... the example I have is just from a quick google search.

    Thanks for reading my post!

I don't think this would be a good idea because if newer people join the forums and download a program that they need help troubleshooting then they would need to create a new post rather than post on on the topic that announced the program. Program authors are more likely to see a reply to their own posts than a new topic I believe.

Yeah, some of our threads are allowed to be posted on after the 3-month waiting period (like program threads). I think it would be too much of a hassle having to reopen threads for people instead of PMing people when they do gravedig inappropriately, lol

I dont think this is a good idea.
Some treads only need to be posted on once in a few like cupcake training a new list every month

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before and the final answer was no, due to some of the reasons mentioned above. I'm also pretty sure that new users get a few popup messages that redirect them to "must-read" threads. Like the FAQs (which has the forum rules and other useful links in there) and the Tapatalk thread which is useful for some people that spend a lot of time on their phones.
They are "must-read" for a reason, not because we want to troll/annoy users.
    PS: It's 3 months, not 3 weeks

If you have a guide (e.g.: Price Guide, AoBs guide) and you know that it needs to be constantly updated (prices fluctuate, codes sometimes stop working) it's your responsibility to keep it updated, that mostly applies to price guides btw.
You also have PMs for that.
    Just my two cents though.

I understand it needs to be updated, but what he said was after three weeks. a once a month update is all it takes to keep a relevant guide.

That's why that part of my reply was directed at the OP, not you.
Again, that is why people should read the rules.
    -) Gravedigging = 3+ months of inactivity = DISALLOWED.
    He probably just derp'd.

I can say i got picked up for posting on an old thread totally by mistake, it was in a less active section and it was around 3 posts down, so i posted assuming it was fresh.

I can see both sides, also i cant figure out how to close my own threads (is this possible?)

Maybe someone or someones could be put on staff to handle this task? Chief topic locker????

You can't close your own threads unless you're top clraik or VIP.
Not sure if the last part is for real or not
Gonna go ahead and close this as I'm pretty sure Joe said this wouldn't be implemented, brings more cons than pros.
