    thanks, but lazy/busy:.....

    Write in factored form: y=ax (3rd power) + b X(squared) + cX + d -----------> (x-r1)(x-r2)(x-r3)

    y= x(3rd power) + 2 x squared - 19x - 20

    evaluate: (2+3i) (4-5i)

    __________

    #3

    add

    x 9
    - + -
    (x-5) (x+1)

    multiply

    (x+3) (x+5)(x-3)
    ------ x ----------
    (x-3) (x+3)

    y = x^3 + 2x^2 - 19x - 20
    y = (x - 4)(x + 1)(x + 5)
    My method: guess and check D:
    You know the term without x has to be 20 so your numbers have to be factors that multiply to 20, and you go from there.

    (2+3i) (4-5i)
    = 8 - 10i + 12i - 15i^2
    = 23 + 2i
    Because i^2 = -1

    Assuming you meant
    x / (x-5) + 9 / (x+1)
    = (x^2 + 10x - 45) / (x-5)(x+1)
    Find common denominator, change both fractions to have common denominator, then add.

    (x+3) (x+5)(x-3)
    ------ x ----------
    (x-3) (x+3)

    x+3 and x-3 both cancel out (present in both top and bottom of the fraction)
    Answer is x+5

    P(-1) = (-1)^3 + 2(-1)^2 - 19(-1) - 20
    = -1 + 2 - 19 - 20
    = 0
    x+1
    x^2 + x - 20
    x+1 / x^3 + 2x^2 - 19 x - 20
    x^3 + x^2
    x^2 - 19x
    x^2 + x
    - 20x - 20
    20x - 20
    0
    (x + 1)x^2 + x - 20
    (x + 1)(x-4)(x+5)

    PM if you need a picture of the working out ^__^
