I'm a Canon person, but it's mostly because my first DSLR was Canon and all my lenses are now.
I've have a fully manual Nikon film camera and I've had a few point-and-shoots, and they're very good as well.
I'm a bit late to the party in terms of responding to this thread, but there's my .02 .

I've got a Canon AE-1 right now with a decent amount of lenses. I've had two AE-1 Programs in the past, but sadly one was stolen and one broke. I really prefer film cameras. They're so fun to work with and I really love shooting it completely manual.

I have a Sony a390 DSLR.
It's really basic in terms of DSLRs but it was like $400 when I got it three years ago.
It was exactly what I wanted at the time, a cheap dslr to get into photography but I never really got into it. It takes a pretty decent picture though. I still use it a few times a month.
Honestly if you're just needing to take high quality pictures of jewelry and aren't too savvy with cameras (specifically DSLRs) then you'd be wise to save your money with a higher end point and shoot with a high zoom feature/MP number.

^A camera like this is fool proof.
i have this old pink one from like six years ago with the brand scratched off. it's really old and definitely the kind of thing you would buy at wallmart.
Recently bought a Canon EOS 600D and it's amazing My first DLSR so I wanted to buy something cheaper/olderish to get the hang of it first. I would definitely recommend it. Takes amazing shots <3
