how to register websites without giving your address and identity?

i learned that when i run the whois program on terminals (on mac it was/usr/bin/whois) and try websites, it will tell me who bought the domain, and when they did this, and where they live.

is all this info in there because godaddy releases it publicly?
if you paid in cash, could you avoid having your info given away?

There are ways to hide it. Just costs more.

(you need an account to see links)
