[MINI-GUIDE] How to Enter DFU Mode .

    DFU MODE

Here are just a few facts that i have gathered on the internet about ' DFU MODE ' .

What is iPhone ( iPod Touch too , dont worry xD ) DFU Mode ?
DFU mode is a state that you can put your iPhone into where it can interface with iTunes but does not load the iPhone operating system or boot loader (this is what really differs DFU mode from recovery mode) .
DFU stands for Device Firmware Update .

What is DFU Mode used for ?
The primary reason people need to access DFU mode on their iPhone is to change the firmware on the device .
This can serve to downgrade to a prior iPhone firmware and operating system , or to use a custom firmware that is required for a jailbreak or SIM unlock . For instance , if you got the iPhone OS 4 download installed and decided you would rather have a prior version of the firmware on your iPhone , you would need to do this through DFU mode .

IMPORTANT NOTE : DFU mode is not recovery mode . Recovery mode has a picture that says connect to iTunes .
In DFU mode , the iPhone screen backlight is not even on and the display is blank . If you have anything on your display you are not in DFU mode .

Here's a famous video on YouTube showing you how to enter DFU Mode :

    Steps :
How to enter iPhone DFU Mode
Connect the iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes .
Turn the iPhone off ( hold down the power button at the top of the iPhone ) .
Hold down the sleep/power button and home button together for exactly 10 seconds, then release the power button .
Continue to hold down the Home button until a message appears in iTunes telling you an iPhone in recover mode has been detected .

Now , these are the typical steps that ' everyone ' is posting everywhere . However , this may not work for everybody ( me for example ) .
Here are a few other alternative steps into entering DFU Mode :

    Method 1)

Attach the phone to the PC .
    Turn the phone off .
Hold power button and home button together for *exactly* 10 seconds .
Release power button but keep holding the home button until the PC beeps as a USB device is recognized .
At no point will the display come on . Now your restore should work .

Having problems ? Try adjusting the 10 seconds to be slightly less like 9 seconds , then 8 , then 7 . It’s a tricky timing but you will eventually get it .

    Method 2)

Hook up the phone powered on to the PC .
Now hold home button / power button until the phone turns off and keep holding for 10 seconds . If the phone ever turns on during this phase , start over and hold for less time .
Now release power button and continue holding home button until the PC recognizes the phone .
I don’t like this method as much because there are “ rumors ” that it may cause some 1604 errors in the restore . I am not convinced of that though .

    Method 3)

Attach the phone to the PC .
    Turn the phone off .
Press and hold power button . Keep holding power button . As soon as you see display on the screen of any sort press and hold home button .
Hold power button and home button together for *exactly* 10 seconds .
Release power button but keep holding home button until the PC beeps as a USB device is recognized .
At no point will the display come on . Now your restore should work .

At this point , if you have tried all of the above and still not getting into DFU Mode , then it is time for the Ultimate Alternative .
These are the steps that i myself have created , after lots of trial and error .

Step 1 : Switch off your Apple Product .
Step 2 : Press and Hold Power and Home button .
Step 3 : Keep holding until you see that the ' Apple Logo ' disappears , there should also be a white flash .
Step 4 : Let go of the power button when you see the ' Apple Logo ' disappears ( a few seconds of difference doesn't really matter )

Step 5 : Keep holding the home button for about roughly 5-10 seconds . ( some Apple Devices varies , idk why too so just keep trying )
Step 6 : You are now in DFU Mode ! Congratulations

But again , my method may or may not work for everybody . I just find that all the other methods do not really work for me , except my own .
If you experience any problems feel free to post them here , and i'll see how i can help . Be sure to state your purpose of entering DFU Mode , so that i know how i can help !
Hahahaha , okayy :3 Good luck people , and have fun ~ ^^

Yellow is burning my eyes. But very nice guide, I've never wanted to jailbreak my iPod, but maybe I'll DFU it if it's possible.

Slasher, you do know that when you jailbreak your iPod, you have to enter DFU mode to do so? Entering DFU mode by itself really has no purpose unless you are jailbreaking it....and even then the jailbreak tools give you instructions on how to enter DFU mode.

It's actually a pretty safe procedure. And if you mess up, you can restore from a backup you make before jailbreaking(that way you lose nothing)!
