I don't think I fall into the category to download the sniping program, so I was wondering if there was any manual tips you guys could give me?

Maybe you could start by sniping dubloons and codestones first. They are ETS. Just make sure you know the current market price for each item to make sure you didn't overbid with a higher price.
Once you are comfortable sniping ETS items and figured out how late you could enter your last winning bid, then you could move on to higher profit items.
