So I commute to college, and our little common area has a TV (that is always on SportsCenter mind you). We hooked up an N64 to it, but the next day we couldn't play it because "the television is for everyone so it is unfair for one group to monopolize it." I already said I would bring in my own TV to play N64 on, but apparently that is frowned upon. Any suggestions? I need to get my Super Smash Bros. and Pokemon Stadium 2 on!

Sounds to me like somebody complained.

I would suggest asking if you can timeshare the tv, or make a sign up sheet of times. IE: Request the use of the tv for the timespan of a tv show (30minutes - 1 hr), where you can watch/do whatever you want with it, but then you have to give it up to whomever signs up for the next 1 hour chunk. Also be sure to mention that you would welcome whomever wants to play video games to join you.

That way you can say you are sharing with everyone AND respecting the communal space.

Alternatively, see if the communal space can be used by clubs. if it is, start a video game appreciation group. Meet in the common room.

Well there is like a commuter's council thing and they make all the decisions regarding the common room. Apparently the person that they report to just got back from somewhere and he had more important things to worry about. Eventually they talked to him and he said he didn't care as long as whenever we were done with it it got put away immediately. So no Battle Royale for the TV but at least everybody wins.
