How to Setup A VPN w/ Pictures!

Recently I've had a few people PMing asking questions about VPNs, so I figured I would write a guide about it, for anyone else who might be interested.
For this guide, I'll be using Free VPNs, specifically PPTP VPNs.
There are VPNs you can pay for, and if you get the chance/money, I would highly recommend them, as they are usually inexpensive.

    - What is a VPN -

A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network.

Basically it's like a proxy, but way better.

There are 2 types of VPNs, PPTP and OpenVPN.
For more info on the differences between the two, you can read about them (you need an account to see links)

I prefer to use PPTP VPNs since they are really easy to setup, you do it from your network sharing center.

    - How to Setup a PPTP VPN -

So you will first need to find the PPTP VPN you are wanting to use.
For this example I will be using (you need an account to see links)

The first thing you will do is open up your Network Sharing Center, like this:

One you have your Sharing Center open, you will need to click on "Setup a New Connection or Network"

That will open up a new window that looks like this:

You will then need to click on "Connect to a Workplace" and click next, and you will get a window like this:

Now you will click on where it says "Use my Internet Connection", and you'll get something like this:

Now this is where the website you are using will come in.
Where it says "Internet Address" you will put the server to the VPN you are using.
Sometimes it will be an actual web address like blahblahvpn.com or sometimes it will be in the format of an IP, like 100.16.36.
For (you need an account to see links) it is in the form of a web address:

Now, as you can see, there is one for UK, and one for US.
Whichever one you use it up to you.
We'll go with the UK for now.
So where it says "Internet Address" we would enter uk.pptpvpn.org, like this:

Where it says "Destination Name" is just what you want to name this particular VPN, you can name it anything you want.
One you have done the above, you will then click next.
(Leave all the little check boxes unchecked)

And you will be brought to a page like this:

As you probably guessed, this is where we will enter the Username and Password from (you need an account to see links)

Then enter in the info, like this:

I always check the box that says "Show Characters" just so I can see that I am typing in the password right.
Also, I don;t recommend checking the box that says save the password, as most of the sites change the password multiple times a day.
All you need to do to get the new password is go back to the website

Once you have done that, click Connect.
And you'll get a window like this:

It'll say it's connecting and some other stuff.

Then you should get a window like this:

And there you go, your connected to a VPN

    - Notes -
There are some sites that offer 2 types of VPNs.
    Dynamic and Static

Dynamic means that each time you turn the VPN on, you will get a different IP.
This is optimal for doing illegit stuff on multiple accounts,

Static means that the IP address will always stay the same for the VPN.
This is optimal for using on a main account that you don't want associated with your real IP.

And here is some other free PPTP VPN sites.
You can find TONS by just searching google.

If there's any questions you might have, feel free to post or PM me and I'll do my best to help you out.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Duck4Cover again.
Grr, will catch you later on that. Awesome guide though, cheers

One question just to double check though, if you're running for example a SSer with this connected, will it automatically go through the VPN rather than your regular IP without you putting any proxy settings in the programme itself?

    And yep.
Anything that connects to the internet, if you have a VPN on, will use the VPN.
So ABers, and SSers, as long as you have the VPN on, it'll use the VPN connection to access the internet

Hey @(you need an account to see links) the username and pw appears to be the same as this guide's when I opened the link, does it give the same IP address to everyone?

Yea, the User + Pass will be the same for everyone.
The only time they change is when the website changes them, usually a few times a day.
Although some websites just keep the same password all the time.
But when a new computer gets registered on the network, it'll get a different IP.
    So everyone gets different IPs

Ah I see thanks for the clarification. Does this connection die out after some time like how a proxy will after some time?

    No problemo
    And certain websites do.
But it's usually a long time, like 4-5 hours or so.
When I used to AB with these, that's when I would need to come back and re-login the VPN.
But if your on y our computer when it happens, you'll know when it does as you'll get a little notification in the bottom righthand corner saying something like "The VPN Connection has disconnected".

Thanks for the guide, I was just trying to explain this to someone but it'll be a lot easier to let them use this as reference.

    For sure.
That sounds about like me, that was another reason I decided to make this.
Like, when I try to explain things, I know exactly what I am trying to say but it doesn't always come out the way I want it to xD
So sometime it ends up confusing the person even more lol.
But I'm glad you guys are getting some use out of this!
