how do i gain "xp"?

Start of by killing fire flans. It's really easy because you have the magic ability Ice when you first join and it's pretty much a one hit kill. You will only get about 30xp per kill but you can get to level 10 very quickly this way... also, good Gil drops as well.

Once you have leveled up a bit with the flans, you want to go into the trade section and see if anyone is selling any decent weapons or magic upgrades.

I would recommended the "Apex Blade" <- good damage and a chance of haste being cast at the beginning of each battle which will come in handy is you bump into any wild wolves whilst gaining exp. They can be pretty tough at low levels so maybe you might want to get a few HP potions whilst in the shop as well.
