Can any legal action be taken by neopets or users who have lost accounts?

Please enlighten me... Like can neopets sue someone using unregs or hash lists etc? Can the users who have lost their accounts take actions against the theives?
Please explain too.... Thanks so much!

For having your account stolen, no . It was never your account, it was owned by Viacom.
As for simply using unregistered emails, hash lists, or the like, no . However, they have threatened legal action (though I don't think anything ever became of it) for hacking into accounts, generating NPs, and the like .

If you take the Hash lists through hacking, then yes Viacom can take action. Hacking accounts is also illegal, since it involves hacking.

Owners of accounts definitely cannot sue because it was never their property to begin with. Who would they sue anyway? It would be close to impossible to pinpoint who exactly took their account. Kinda like how Neopets can freeze accounts whenever they feel like it whether the person has spent money or not - it was never truly their account, it's Viacom's property.

People who do serious hacking into Neo can probably get sued, but that's different than just taking old accounts.

They aren't gonna worry about regular people who get into accounts and such.
It would be too much hassle for them go after people who do that, as there are too many.

But they would be concerned with people who get into and manipulate/copy the database as that's definitely illegal. But usually people who can do that know how to cover their tracks well enough that they USUALLY don't get caught.

Thanks guys. I just had a like 30 minute 'argument' with my boyfriend because he was like 'yeah users could sue people who access their accounts through unregs' after I explained what they were. It was basically a lot of shit I shouldn't have gotten upset about but I wanted to at least find out how the system actually worked.

The only legal action I'm aware of was just threatening legal action against someone who posted numerous programs publicly to everyone, and advertised it very actively circa.... 2005? He told me that he was contacted formally by attorneys threatening to take him to court so he shut his site down. They really don't care about the average user as was mentioned above.

Do you remember who that person was?

I know I had been talking to sockopen awhile ago and he said that he got something like that.
But from my experiences that kid is a compulsive liar, so I wouldn't believe half the shit he says. lol

Oooo, I'd be interested to hear about that as well.
