Yep. To make it worse, it's a county that's usually thought of as more ''forward thinking'' than the other ones around here. My county is actually worse. In high school we actually had to skip a huge chunk of our biology book. About 90% of my class was happy about it because, "Jesus would be mad".

Oh no I understand, but I meant Greenville (the county where the school was) is more reasonable than the other counties in the upstate

My state SC has a ton of separate counties in the upper area of it- the upstate is usually not known as being very... open minded. But Greenville is usually better about this because it's a city with a ton of folks from other states in it. Hope that clears up any confusion.

Something similar happened to me a few years back, in junior high. We were paired up and told to write a list of very famous, influential people who were dead. I suggest George Washington. My partner's response:

"Good idea! Wait... is he dead?"

She was completely serious. She really had no idea exactly who George Washington actually was or if he was indeed, dead.

I can't even believe people could be so dumb. I girl in my English class had to make a speech and couldn't pronounce the word intelligent. I was like, if you can't pronounce it why would you even use it in a speech?

One of my good friends who happened to be a biology/chemistry/physics whiz moved down to Georgia. He nearly went nuts. One of the bio teachers he had actually pulled him aside and asked "aren't you old enough to know better?" when he had disagreed with the class discussion after they involved religion in it. It's a totally different mindset from what he was used to here, lol. Our old school was strictly science-based, we never involve religion in our lessons here.
