I didn't have sex until I was 19 and I didn't even like who i was with.

The hymen is a thin layer of membranous tissue that only partially covers the opening depending on the lady. Think a half moon or crescent moon.

It's not unheard of for some athletes to accidentally break it in other ways, either - gymnasts, even bicyclists, etc.
