This is seriously screwed up.
I just opened my browser, and this was on the news feed thing.
I don't know why it affected me so much, but it seriously pissed me off.
Like to a level that I want to do something bad to the teacher and the company who took the picture.
Look at the poor kid
Miles, who has spinal muscular atrophy, is seated in his wheelchair, noticeably separated from his peers, who are posed in three rows. Smiling, Miles leans way over in his chair. "Look at the angle that he was in," Belanger said. "He wants to be part of the gang so much." As for the 7-year-old's earnest smile, Miles' dad said, "It makes me feel even worse that he's so happy in the picture. He's still naive to how other people can treat him."
Wheelchairs normally don't do too well on steps though, so I don't see how he could have been more included.

Maybe have the rest of the class stand around him?
They actually retook the picture, and just sat him on the bench with them, don't understand why this wasn't done in the first place.
I'm normally anti-PC because I don't like catering to anyone but this actually tugged at y heart strings. He looks so happy to be there! Fuck those assholes.
He needs a different school with people who aren't total asshats.

Innocents is a good thing, so what imagine how much better the world would be if everyone stopped playing head games on, on both sides of the spectrum
I doubt it was done to intentionally separate him from the group. It was most likely a case that they were worried about moving him out of the chair, or having pupils standing on benches around him.
I'm not being heartless here and I'm glad he was more involved when they re-took the photograph. I can totally understand why his mum was upset at seeing him not part of the group.
Things like this happen quite a lot because of the sue-culture of today.

*deep breath* *shakes head* I don't have too much to say. This is awful and it's very upsetting and like the mom/dad whatever said the sadness and detest for the situation is amplified incredibly by the fact that little boy is leaned over as close to them as he can get and looking so happy. There is a billion ways this picture could have been better. Shame on the photographer and shame on the teacher

I don't see why they couldn't have scooted the other kids over towards him while placing them in size order. I mean, I get that the photographer perhaps wanted to preserve a sense of symmetry by having the kids centered in the middle on the bench so the distance from the edge of the bench would be equal on both sides, but I think the composition is rendered even less symmetrical by excluding the poor kid from his peers anyway...
It would have even been better if they'd gotten the teacher to stand behind the bench near the boy to fill in that huge empty space.
What a terrible lack of compassion.
Definitely poor judgement on both the photographer's part and the teacher's part.
