TBH, it's about your happiness not anyone else's and if you're seubleasing the room to your friend, than said friend should understand that you can no longer put yourself through this, and should understand that for your own sanity you have to leave... Let them figure out the rest on there own... IF your in the path of sandy either NJ or NY most people are going out of state to get work cause of all the business's that were ruined...

I'd say advertise that they are looking for anther room-mate, aftr discussing with them of course, and once they have chosen someone to live with them that can carry your end of the rent, then you are free to leave, and they will have a replacement person so that they are screwed over when it comes to rent.

Why not try posting on Craigslist or something?
Or maybe (I'm not sure the layout of your apt) but have your ex (or you) sleep out on the couch. You might be able to set up a curtain or something and section it off as a mini room (again, not sure how the layout is, this would only work in some situations).
