"I see messages that Windows might not be genuine. How do I fix this?
If you're seeing notifications that the copy of Windows that is installed on your PC might not be genuine, or that you might be a victim of counterfeit software, it's likely that your copy of Windows was not properly activated or is otherwise not genuine. To fix this, click the notification and follow the steps to either repair Windows or—if you have inadvertently obtained counterfeit software—buy genuine Windows.

Until you correct the issue, you'll receive periodic reminders that Windows is not genuine. In addition, to more clearly display these messages, your desktop might turn black. You can reset it, but every 60 minutes, it will return to black until the issue is resolved.

Regardless of genuine status, Windows will still be able to get critical security updates. However, access to optional updates or benefits available exclusively to genuine Windows customers, such as Microsoft Security Essentials, might be restricted."

You can ignore it and keep using it normally.
Could be a 1-off thing (could be).

Sometimes if it detects Windows as a *counterfeit*, some functions will be disabled (nothing major, but annoying) on Windows, like proper color cycling, inability to go full-screen on some programs, etc.

What you do then is restart the computer and it should go away until the next time it detects as *counterfeit* again.
There are times when it detects *counterfeit* right off the restart and you'll have to restart repeatedly until it lets you in.

It's not a permanent solution, but a remedy.

    ---

Did you install any new programs recently? Sometimes they conflict with Windows' validation. If so, try uninstalling.

    ---

-Maybe someone guessed your Windows key and is using it now; when 2 people are detected, both are locked as *counterfeits*.
-If the Key was never renewed during refurbishment, maybe the last user wrote it down and is using it now (or gave it to someone).
-If it gets really annoying, you can call MS and have it sorted out.

It's probably not a genuine copy. People use pirated copies all the time at third-party places. If it comes back, message PM me and I'll fix it for you. Plenty of experience in this area. @(you need an account to see links)

@(you need an account to see links), probs was Windows update if it's not a genuine copy. Every now and then, there'll be a new detection method released through a 'security update' by Windows. You can either re-patch or not install that particular update. Both are annoying. Had this happen last month.

It could have been a false positive. The 'not genuine' message really has nothing to do with a virus at all. What should happen is that your background should be black, and the bottom right hand corner says, "This is not a genuine copy of Windows" or something like that. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. Nothing bad happens from it, it's just annoying. If it comes back, I can patch it and fix it in about 5 minutes time.
