and the English-language barrier there, again compared to other major Asian cities.

Not terrible at all, but you'll definitely need more patience to get your intentions across (they have greater pride in their native language in their schools vs. adoption of English).

I have been practicing a little bit my Japanese for almost a year so I could learn how to say the basics to be at least /fine !
