Post Search of School Lockers - Safety Precaution or Invasion of Privacy?

Yep, here's another one for you. Trying to get this section booming again

Do you think schools have a right to do random locker checks? Yes or No?

I actually say yes, schools have a right to perform random locker checks. Why? Because school lockers are the property of the school, its purpose is merely for you to borrow the space for school-related materials. Anything that could potentially put you in trouble if a school official found it, (such as drugs, alcohol, weapons, porn, etc.) should not be school!

I think random locker checks help keep schools safe... That's just my opinion, what's yours?

REMEMBER THIS IS THE DEBATE ZONE! THAT MEANS ALL POSTS MUST HAVE 3-5 SENTENCES. ALSO SOURCES ARE EXTREMELY HELPFUL!!!

Schools have every right to go through lockers. Lockers are not private property, they belong to the tax paper or to the school depending where you go. They have the right to treat them however they wish. A locker is just a place the school lends a student to hold their books.

I agree. It IS their property, so if they believe that checking them could make the schools safer, more power to them!
Although, I think there should be limits such as not being able to go through a person's backpack or purse or whatnot.
Unless they have a legitimate reason to believe that something dangerous has been stored there, I think they should stay away from that.

(... I never used my locker in highschool. )

Yes, if they think you are hiding something illegal (drugs and even weapons!). Or if they think you have done anything against school's laws, like stealing or vandalising. Most things you wouldn't like a teacher to see should remain at home or in your pocket

Yes! They have every right. The lockers are simply borrowed out to students to hold their school supplies. If a student decides to put a weapon or drugs in his/her assigned locker that is still the school's property, the school should have a right to remove such items out of what is theirs. Students should know ahead of time not to put such things into something that does not belong to them. Lockers are not somewhere for students to hold illegal items.

Absolutely. No child should be in possession of drugs, no child should be in possession of a firearm or other weapon, no child should be holding alcohol, no child should be doing anything that is against the law. How "fun" said illegal action is has no bearing whatsoever on holding a an illegal substance or suspicious item that child is holding on school property. A child must abide by the rules of the school, do what you want on your own time on your own property but the second you step foot onto that school property you must follow those rules. My favorite instances back in high school was when the drug dogs come into the schools and you can have a list of kids running to their locker, the dog does not even need to do anything and the guilty will go running hoping they can get to their locker quick enough. I have zero sympathy for a child getting caught for possession in a case like that.

Yes, because in my school last year, a kid decided to bring in a gun and knife to school, left it in her locker, and then later on in the morning the teacher let her go to her locker and as soon as she came back to class, she was trying to kill one of the students! I'm serious, this is not a joke! The teacher then called the cops, so the cops came to our school, we all had to be evacuated, and there were K9's in our school sniffing for drugs and other stuff! Everyone in my school had to be searched, all cause of one student! On that day, our school was on the news and the girl who had a gun and a knife went to jail.

I'm going to play the Devil's Advocate in this debate.

Random Searches-Time Costly, Ineffective, Increased Possibility of Theft.

I believe that Locker Searches should be done and conducted only when there is tangible doubt regarding what exactly is being stored in the lockers. This isn't a matter of whether or not it is lawful. A school is an institution of learning and people should not bring personal effects that violate the school code. Yet, the school should legally be able to perform random locker inspections. However, I do not agree that it should be done.

    Why?

First, you have to take into account how many students there are in school. Some schools have over 1000+ students in one grade. Searching so many lockers is not going to be easy. Also, take this possibility into account.

Jake has weed in his locker, the teacher or security officer searching the locker, finds it.

They decide to keep it to themselves or blackmails Jake regarding possession of illegal contraband.

Jake can't tip off the authorities without getting into trouble himself.

Result-> Guard takes the illegal contraband and keeps it to themselves.

    or

One of the guards/teacher takes something from the locker, it's hard to pinpoint who took the stuff. This could easily turn into a situation where the boy cries wolf.
A student that hates the teacher makes up a story saying his stuff is missing and his friends back his story. It becomes a shit storm.

Yes, you can argue that there could be two teachers or people in a team to search the lockers together. This points you back to my second point, ineffective and waste of time/resources.

If you want to search lockers, do a monthly search on students who are suspected of using/selling drugs.

This way, there are less lockers to search.

    Anyone argue against my reasoning?

Random locker checks, are just that, random. You don't necessarily do all the lockers, just pick say, all lockers on the 2nd floor.
    ---
Well, Jake shouldn't have weed in his locker... I'm neutral of the whole marijuana situation but it should not be smoked at school or stored in lockers.
    ---
I do agree that it may feel like a waste of time, but you never know when you find a weapon, which can potentially save someones life.

Well, anything can be a weapon. A baseball bat is a popular choice. Guns and Knives are too obvious.

Still it would be better to target certain students who've been caught smoking/leaving class/ late to class often. Etc.

    A hit list of sorts.
