Ah, I see now. Thanks. I always thought def was super needed in fights, first time I ever heard of forgoing it.
Defense is the least important of the HSD stats, and usually only trained by long-term BDers, or those looking to make a nice-looking pet; it's a situational stat. If you later decide to train def, but are at 5,000 HP, you'll waste a lot more time and NP balancing your pet back.
-You must KO an opponent to win. You'll never win just by defending.
-Shield weapons are tactical weapons for specific challengers/situations. It's easy to blindside an enemy with random attack icons. But hard to defend random icons with shield specificity.
-On average, shields have never defended more icons than attackers can produce. Again, see above reason for tactical use.
Eg. the best multi-shield, "Hubrid Nox Memorial Shield (HNMS)", defends full light, but only 5 icons each of 4 other elements. Many weapons do 6+ of 1 icon type, so you still lose overall.
What lilangel is referring to, is the basic smash strategy. Just tank and take heavy hits (because you have the HP), while returning heavy blows from attack. Essentially, you're just outlasting your opponent; with HP like 5,000, you can fight multiple times before you need to heal. Forget defending altogether.

Update from Today's News:
ATTENTION - Now that we have your attention, here is a friendly reminder to train your Neopets on a regular basis. For no reason! Well, the reminder is for no reason. Training is for a reas-- never mind. That is all.
I don't even have a pet trained or anything. Ugh.

Urgh my highest is below 500hsd. I am not looking forward to these inflation prices.
I'm really excited for this potential new BD plot. My BD pet isn't so great but hopefully it will get the job done
