You have to have a good computer to mine effectively.
They use your CPU/GPU (depending on the mining program) to crack hashes or something (im not too sure) and you gain like a fraction of a bitcoin, etc.

Yeah as far as I know the main use of them is buying hookers, Drugs, and Guns on the Deep interwebz
I was pretty interested in them for a while too.. not sure how viable they'll remain as a currency since the government is bound to crack down on this stuff eventually
