    What is the best, free way to prevent Viruses on a PC?

    Not looking to spend. But if there are ones that really are better that cost money, i will pay.

    I've always used Microsoft Security Essentials, and most others I know always used AVG.

    I use Avast but from what i've read Microsoft Security Essentials is the way to go.

    1) Keep OS and software up to date
    2) Don't download crap
    3) If you download crap, run it through VirusTotal before deleting it (or running it)

    I've not run any virus software in years and I'm 100% virus free, except a few I have collected and stored after disinfecting friends computers when they are infected by a virus AV software can't control.
