Today my laptop just randomly shut it's self down. When I went to start it back up all I get is the ACER screen and then it goes to a black screen with a flashing hyphen/underscore in the top left corner and will not go any further than that. I've googled my brains out today and to no avail, just plenty of questions asked with no real answers. I have no idea what to do. I don't have a windows repair/installation disk as my laptop didn't come with one. My laptop uses windows 7 if that helps. I've looked through bios and everything still seems fine. It just won't start windows and the black screen with the flashing hyphen will remain on the monitor no matter how long I leave it.
If this has ever happened to you or someone you know please help. Thanks.
Mm, something similar happened to me. I un-installed something and broke my Windows. Repair disk didn't work so I had to do a format. Luckily I didn't loose much.
It started to load up Windows, but never actually did, like yours.
Something is messed up with your windows OS. Try seeing if you can turn it on in safe mode? If so, backup and reformat.
Google is a life saver sometimes, btw.

I've tried googling, all day. All I can find is either questions without answers, questions answered with other people saying "OH ME TOO" or just people asking if they've tried the obvious.
I've tried safe mode (f8) it won't initiate the safe mode screen at all. All it does it beep loudly and continue to stay on the screen.
I guess I don't mind losing everything as long as I can use my laptop again, I have no options to reformat or to reinstall so I guess I may have to download windows 7 and burn it as bootable on a disk.
Last time my laptop won't start also. I remember burning a recovery disk before. Something like, coming back to previous state when it is still functional. If you backed up that during time, all your previous files up to that point will return. It's very handy. I tried it several times, I even repair my own when it turns like a crap
do you have a windows 7 boot disk ? try doing a clean install
I might have an idea. This has happened to me once. It's a problem with the hard drive. Either it got burnt up or somehow got messed up. Unfortunately the only fix to this is buying another hard drive that is compatible with your laptop. It can cost anywhere from 50-150 depending on how much gb you get.
