Wow everyone makes it sound like a very common thing... How do you get a kidney infection in the first place? Diet and stress?

Worst I had was a sprained ankle :x

    I feel so sheltered.

Bacteria. Usually it stems from a UTI bacterial infection that has traveled into the upper urinary system, your kidneys, causing the pain and in some cases can be an extremely dangerous situation if the infection spreads to the bloodstream.

Mine come from my urine backtracking into my kidneys, leaving bacteria that will cause infection. In some cases this results in nausea, fever, dehydration, and/or blood going into your urine.

The most common cause is not peeing after you have sex. You're supposed to go pee to flush out whatever bacteria got into your urethra during sex, otherwise it'll make its way up to your bladder and kidneys. Also not drinking enough water will cause you to not urinate enough, meaning you aren't flushing out bacteria often enough. What Ashley has is called a bladder reflux or something like that that is more common in children. I think there is a surgery that helps correct that.
