Need help from a resident of Rio. +rep to all helpers

my family is in the basic stages of research into purchasing an apartment in Rio de Janero. Primarily for the World Cup and the Olympics. I need help figuring out some of the safest places in and around the city to live. It would likely be an apartment, but could be a home, so help for both would be nice, basically 4+ bedrooms anything is fair game.

So for you rio residents, what are the safer parts of the city to purchase a place like this?

I'm not from Rio, nor do I know any places in it, but (you need an account to see links) is a guide that gives tips on how to be safe.

@(you need an account to see links) Hope this helps slightly. I'll do some more research and let you know.

EDIT: It seems that Copacabana is a safe place, I've seen it mentioned in multiple places.

I'm not a resident either but i did some research.

Know you probably don't need another guide but I found (you need an account to see links) which might help as it's specific to Rio de Janeiro.

    Tl;dr version of the article:
Don't go to downtown at night
    Avoid shoeshiners

If price isn't a huge option, Barra de Tijuca is supposed to be known as one of the safest, highest class areas. I would imagine while it may be pricey, getting somewhere a little bit outside of it would be cheaper, and dependant on locations, closer to the olympics as a possibility. Regions close-by may serve as a good starting point for apartment / house hunts.

price is not a huge issue, there is a cap set, but it is pretty solidly sized.

Just looked it up. Barra de Tijuca is actually the area where the olympics are being HOSTED. Therefore, a solid place to start looking is obviously Barra de Tijuca, Jacarepagua (north of BdT), Leblon (east), Bangu (further north), Guaratiba (west). I'll get to looking at if any of these areas have huge problems with security. These are by far the closest locations to the olympics though, and considering they surround the center of commerce (barra de tijuca itself) you can take more or less, they are overall safer neighborhoods. Someplace by the coast would likely be better, so try checking out guaratiba, but Jacarepagua is by far the closest to the main city.
