Exclamation Where is the best place to learn coding/programming?

I've always been very curious, but didn't really have the time to get into it. I would like to know what i would need to learn if i were to venture into creating a good website with a lot of functions. The website I'm interested in possibly building could be: image hosting site, social media, or a simple site that would allow me to post funny pictures I've collected over the years etc..

I found a site called w3schools. I'm sure many of you know about this, I've read some good review on it and some bad. It has a lot of languages listed such as: HTML, CSS, XML, JAVA,ASP,PHP,SQL,JQUERY AJAX ETC.

I'm just confused here, which languages are essential and which would be useless(if any). Is that website a good source? Is it outdated, where can i find a reliable up-to-date source.

If anyone could give me any info it'd a great help.

I recommended Tizag for PHP and w3 for Javascript/HTML
